Jomolhari Trek II
The Jomolhari trek in Bhutan is an exhilarating adventure in the Himalayas of Bhutan. This starts from Paro and ends at Paro. Why choose this trek? This trek will take you to the spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari from the base camp. This trek will take you into an area adorned with pristine turquoise lakes. The trail in this trek passes through apple orchards, rhododendron forests, alpine yak pastures, and old Buddhist monasteries to snowcapped mountains. On the last day of trekking, the white mountain range of Kanchenjunga in Sikkim is just rewarding.

Day 01: Arrival at Paro airport and do local sightseeing at Paro
Flight to Paro is one of the eye-catching of the highest mountains in the world. You will see great Himalayan peaks like Everest, Kanchenjunga, and Makalu. Take the first glimpse of a happy country The. On arrival at Paro Airport, you will be welcomed and escorted by company representatives from Bhutan Travel Light Tours and taken to the hotel. Start your first sightseeing trip to Bhutan through Nyima Zam Bridge and Rinpung Dzong, a castle and a monastery. One of Bhutan’s tentative sites in the UNESCO plan lists for future World Heritage Sites. This is where Bernardo Bertolucci’s film “Little Buddha” was shot. Just above the dzong stands Ta dzong (watchtower fortress), now converted into the National Museum of Bhutan. If you have a morning flight, you will take a short hike to Zuri Dzong, home to the valley’s local protector. On the way to town, stop at the Iron Bridge Maker temple and visit Kyichu Lhakhang, the first-ever built temple in the country. The day ends up exploring the elegant traditional houses of Paro town.
Day 02: (Tiger nest hike, ↗800M) – Shana
Today, after breakfast, you will be prepared to visit the notable landmark of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Nevertheless, your day will be exciting during your stay in Bhutan. You will be hiking the top icon of Bhutan, sitting more than 800 meters above Paro Valley; the most heart-touching ‘Taktsang’ (Tiger Nest monastery) perches on a cliff face of the mountain. It is renowned to the outside world for its uniqueness and spectacular position. Once done with the Tiger Nest hike, you will drive to the military camp of Gunitsawa, where the trek starts. The first night of camping will be just above the military camp at an elevation of 2800M.
Day 03: Trek: Shana– Thangthangkha
TREK 20KM |7 – 8 HOURS| 690M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 3750M
Today, you will go on a long hike up to 20km. We will follow the Pa Chhu (Paro River) trail, ascending and descending through pine, oak, and spruce forests. After 3 hours of continuous hiking and crossing small streams, you will reach Shingkharap, a stone house at 3110m. A hot lunch will be served at this point. Continue your trek; we will find the trail junction – the left is an old trade route, and the right leads to a wooden bridge (take the right path). We will climb through rhododendron bushes and reach our camp at 3550m. If the weather is clear, take the first glimpse of Mt. Jomolhari.
Day 04: Trek: Thangthangkha – Jangothang base camp
Trekking will be shorter today than the first day, but there will be a significant height gain. The trek continues through Paro Chhu Valley. As we ascend, we will come across an army checkpoint. From here, you can enjoy the spectacular view of mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks of Bhutan. We will walk through a muddy area of Yak herder. Passing the yak herder settlements/villages of Soe, Takethang and Dangochang will take you to Jangothang (one of the beautiful campsites on this trek). From here, you can enjoy a closer view of Mt. Jomolhari.
Day 05: Trek: Halt Jangothang
TREK 8KM |4 – 5 HOURS | ASCEND 850M | CAMP ALT 4050M
Enjoy the early morning sun rays on Mt. Jomolhari. Today, you will hike north of your camp to Mt. Jomolhari and Mt. Jichu Drake viewpoint. It offers spectacular views. Here, you are likely to spot blue sheep, griffon vultures, and blue puppies. In the afternoon, return to camp and rest for the day.
Day 06: Trek: Jangothang via Tshophu lake (4380m) and Bhonte La pass (4902m) to Dhumzo
TREK 16KM |6 – 7 HOURS| 850M ASCENT|1090M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 3800M
The trail leads north to the valley’s last settlement and descends again to the Paro River. Walk up to the turquoise Tshophu Lake (4380m). You will come across a second lake after you climb. Descend to the hidden valley and reach Bonte La Pass at 4890m. This is the highest pass in this trek, with clear mountain views of Basingthang (5500m) and Chatarake (5570m). Continue your trek crossing the pass; the trail descends and reaches Soi Yaksa Valley. Camp at 3800m
Day 07: Dhumzo – Thombu Shong
TREK 11KM |4 – 5 HOURS| 720M ASCENT|350M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4180M
Morning climbs over 100m over a ridge and then drops to another stream. Crossing that stream, the trail heads to the rhododendron forest and runs to the old castle monastery Sey Dzong. The route turns south, ascending to Takhung La (4520 m)—descent to Thombu Shong (4180m), the last camp of the trek.
Day 08: Thombu Shong – Gunitsawa, drive to Paro
TREK 13KM |4 – 5 HOURS| 200M ASCENT|1650M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4180M
Climb out of the valley through rhododendron bushes to the summit of Thombu La at 4380m. The clear weather and great views of Mt. Jomolhari, Mt.Jichu Drake, Teri Kang, and even Kanchenjunga from the pass are rewarding. The trail then drops gradually to about 4000m; down the ridge, you will finally reach Gunitsawa (2850m), where the trek ends.
Day 09: Paro to Thimphu
You will be transferred to the capital city (Thimphu). You will stop at Tachog Lhakhang on the way to see the ancient iron chain bridge. In the morning, make an excursion to Dochula Pass (3100M) to see the panoramic view of Bhutan’s most astounding, highest snow-clad Himalayan peaks. It is the best place for photographers to take a picture of a 360-degree aerial view of 108 Stupas and the snow-clad Himalayas peak. Afternoon visits Buddha’s Point (gigantic bronze Buddha Dordenma statue) located on the mountain overlooking the southern approach of Thimphu town. You will take a short hike to see a panoramic view of the statue. Later, you will join the Buddhist devotees in performing their daily prayers at the whitewashed semi-spherical Memorial Chorten. You will have a walk from Norzin Lam Street to see Thimphu’s clock tower. Interestingly, here, you will see the traffic police signaling in the heart of the town junction. However, you will continue your walk to the handicraft market, where varieties of Bhutanese souvenirs are displaced and bought for a reasonable price. Your day will end with visiting Tashichho Dzong (The castle that serves as the seat of the king and government). Overnight, stay at Thimphu.
Day 10: Departure
On this day, your guide and driver will drop you at Paro airport, where your tour guide and driver will bid you goodbye. It was nice meeting you, and we hope you enjoyed the beauty of our country. We expect you to visit again for a longer duration.
